Mechanisms: Hinges

Hinges are one of my favorite quotidian inventions of all time (with ball bearings and zippers close behind). We use them every day without even stopping to marvel at them! Hinges are much like us. They have knuckles and spines. They bear heavy loads and work best in groups.

Those most recognizable formula is the three-knuckle hinge. Your household doors swing daily on these reliable mechanisms as they are the most durable and most versatile of all the hinges. Enter the Deco Swing Studs and all of the KHM Hoops. These earrings are meant to wear all of the time in most conditions of activity. The hinge mechanisms are strong and integral to the design, allowing for movement and secure attachment. The Deco Stud hinges are measured and cut one at a time, and held together by a flared silver hinge pin. The hoops (the Pillows, the Minis and the Midis), boast two mechanisms. They have a three knuckle hinge at the post origin, and a tension clasp at the closure. I make each of these parts by hand, drill holes, earring posts, rivets, and all.
