FAQ

  • Can you work with inherited stones?

I am happy to incorporate stones you might have on a case by case basis. I would need to inspect the stones to make sure they are strong enough to be removed and re-set. If your stones require polishing or re-cutting, it can add a significant amount of time and cost to the process. If you want to re-set a larger stone (especially a sapphire or diamond) in one of my classic styles, that is quite straightforward and highly encouraged!

  • Do you recycle metal?

I can re-use small amount of gold as accented element in our design. I do not have the setup to refine metals for full re-use myself, so I send it to my supplier to be refined and then reused.

I do take in gold at its weight and can apply the value to the final price of your custom project.

  • How do I clean my jewery?

All of our jewelry, especially rings and necklaces, can get a lot of gunk build-up! Sunscreen, lotion, food…etc. can all build up in chains and settings. I recommend filling a small glass jar or container with hot water and a drop of gentle detergent (make sure it is bleach-free and chlorine-free). I use Dawn. Let it sit in there for 10-15 minutes, and then brush gently with an old soft toothbrush. Dry gently with a soft cloth. For tarnished silver, I recommend a gentle Sunshine polishing cloth.

  • Can I swim in my jewelry?

I do not recommend wearing your jewelry in sea water or chlorine. This is partly due to chemical reactions, and partly to prevent loss as your fingers shrink in cold water. Stones and metal may change color/get damaged if exposed to high heat (hot tubs/hot springs) or excessive sunlight over time. Hot springs also contain sulfur which can turn your silver jewelry black, and damage soft, porous stones such as turquoise and pearl.

If your jewelry does not have any wood or leather components, showering and hand-washing is perfectly fine.

  • Can I customize a piece that I see in your shop?

Most of the my designs can be customized. Customization would include using a different stone type, stones shape, setting style, size, metal color… etc. Contact me if you would like to know if something is customizable!

Please keep in mind that any changes may effect the price and timeline.

  • What do I do if I am having a skin reaction to my jewelry?

If your skin is getting itchy, red, or infected under your jewelry, it is likely a nickel and/or copper allergy. Nickel is found in most plated and gold-fill jewelry (unless specifically stated otherwise), as well as white gold, and some stainless steel. Sterling Silver is 92.5% Silver, and 7.5% copper. If you are super sensitive to these base metals, you may need to make the transition to Fine Silver (999% Silver), nickel-free vermeil, 14-karat Gold and above, Platinum, or surgical steel.

Jewelry that traps moisture against your skin can also cause a moisture rash.

  • What do the markings/numbers/letters on my jewelry mean?

Most jewelry (even hand-made jewelry) will have marking on it that indicates multiple things. The most common indication refers to the materials. .925 or ‘Sterling’ indicates Sterling Silver. .999 indicates Fine Silver. 14K or 585 indicates 14-karat Gold (yellow or white). 18K or 750 means 18-karat Gold (yellow or white). PLAT or PT means Platinum.

Any other stamps or markings usually are the Maker’s Mark. Some vintage jewelry, or jewelry from British Goldsmiths may have royal stamps that say a lot about where and when the piece was made.

You can find these markings on ring interiors, necklace clasps, and earring posts.

  • Do you work with ashes etc.?

Unfortunately I do not, but I can recommend jewelers who do.

This includes: cremains, teeth, bones, hair, semen, and breast milk.

  • Do you do repairs?

I will happily repair/restore any jewelry that I have made. I want to help your KHM jewelry last a lifetime and beyond!

I can recommend other local jewelers who can do repairs and restorations of non-KHM jewels as well as watches.
